Child

Therapy Services

PsychotherapyWorks provides services to individuals, couples and families addressing a wide range of concerns. Some areas of special expertise are described below. We welcome your call to discuss any specific needs or questions you may have.

Children

Child psychology is a unique treatment specialty in which the provider must recognize that children are not simply little adults. Children have a rich psychological world of meaning that is always in a state of development. Play therapy and attachment-based models of interaction with children in therapy provide the most appropriate set of tools for working with children.  Children are part of families, and so when working with a child we work with the whole family to create goals that give children and families the greatest possible opportunities for growth, fulfillment and happiness.

Whats more, we see your child as part of a community of support, which includes doctors, teachers, mentors, religious leaders, friends, tutors, social workers, and therapists. At we will develop a plan that appropriately incorporates important figures in your child’s life.

Adolescents

Adolescents encounter specific types of problems, which often emerge in the process of making the transition from childhood to young adulthood. This transition can be very challenging and practices a unique set of interventions to aid adolescents in their process.

In concert with experts in the field of adolescent psychology, we have developed a model of intervention called Psychological Mentoring. Psychological Mentoring aids in the development of young adults by supporting them in the unique ways that their parents often cannot. In the nuclear family of previous generations, the role of the mentor was often carried by a godparent or grandparent and was an important figure in the development of the child that had little to do with the everyday tasks of raising a child. With the breakdown of the nuclear family, there has been a corresponding loss for the adolescent of the mentoring figure. It is, therefore, not unusual to see an escalation in behavioral problems for adolescents, as well as the onset of new and more challenging problems, as adolescents face new challenges to compete and excel in a technologically complex world

steps right in where this loss has occurred-and the earlier the better. We provide the mentoring which is a buffer against adolescent life problems. This mentoring has been shown again and again to be a positive treatment for the reduction in behavioral problems.

Adoption

offers a specialized service that assists families in the complex adoption process and with the personal challenges that adoption brings. In our experience, psychological services have been a significantly helpful aid to families who are in any of the many stages of adoption. From considering adoption, to being in the adoption process, to being a family with an adopted child, the challenges can feel overwhelming and confusing. As parents who have adopted, not only do we understand the challenges, problems, and joys, we have been there too.

Family Treatment

Not only are we psychologists, we have families too.  Many of us have families that are culturally diverse, so we recognize the challenge and joy that is the remarkable process of belonging to a family. As such, we have a talent for working with culturally diverse families, in ways that our clients feel is vital and creative. We respect the role of religion, tradition, and community, and will work to understand you and your unique situations. Families are our first community, where we learn much of what it means to belong to the human community. Family therapy takes this notion to heart, and we work with the family in ways that nurture communication, foster greater understanding, and increased health and wellness.

Adults

Psychotherapy is a creative and collaborative process in which our clients regularly report significant positive improvements in their lives, the quality of their family life, and their feeling fulfilled as a person. In addition to conventional therapeutic methods, treatment with adults sometimes incorporates art, journaling, walking in the beautiful gardens adjacent to the office, dance, and athletics. The setting for PsychotherapyWorks is a historic old home in which the space itself is a warm, cozy, and inviting place.

Over time, we have seen that a unique aspect of this practice has to do with clients coming to Dr. Kothari after having experienced dissatisfying services elsewhere. Often it is the case when patients were under care of a provider in a large medical style practice. Unlike such a practice, PsychotherapyWorks is dedicated to personalized care of patients. In this practice you are not a number, Dr. Kothari is not over-extended, and when you call, Dr. Kothari is often the person who answers, and thus the process of therapy belongs to you. Dr. Kothari intentionally developed a practice dedicated to personalized service to his clients so it is not surprising that clients report feeling genuinely cared for and understood by him.

Couples

What is really more important to you and your children then the emotional and psychological stability in the relationship with your partner? Research on families in psychology has routinely demonstrated that the emotional and psychological health of the parent’s relationship to each other is one of the most important factors in the development of happy children, affecting healthy peer affiliation, academic success, and interests in extracurricular activities. It is also well known that most couples are challenged in their capacity to understand and accept their partners during the life span of their relationship. Thus, there is no shame whatsoever in utilizing psychotherapy to explore the many and subtle ways that partners become disconnected, and in the process, learn ways to re-connect and grow closer and more loving in their partnership. Critically important is that the therapist be able to work with couples, which is a special type of treatment that requires expertise in understanding where the problems are set in the couple, what are the strengths of the couple, family factors that may be involved, cultural issues, religious issues, as well as a host of other variables that shape your relationship.

is able to offer specialty treatment for couples because of the expertise in culture, religion, ethnicity, and lifestyle that have been core components of Dr. Kothari’s training.

Addictions Treatment including

Internet Pornography Addiction

One of the fastest growing and most misunderstood problems facing men, women, children, families, and couples, is the problems that arise from a person who becomes addicted to viewing Internet pornography. Presently, the problems with Internet-based pornographic materials are really a crisis in which there are very few answers and few individuals willing to look at the problems. Like most addictions, research tells us that the earlier the intervention the better, and this is especially the case for children, adolescents, and couples. is here to assist families and individuals with this problem and has a proven track record of working with families to manage this problem and aid in recovery. Dr. Kothari is a recognized forensic psychological expert who has spent many years researching and teaching in the area of sexual problems and he has developed a treatment model that addresses the problems associated with Internet pornography addiction.

Videogaming

Another emerging area of crisis in the popular culture, especially for children and adolescents, is the extensive role that video games have as the primary way in which many children play. Play is an enormously important factor in the healthy development of children and in the healthy development into adulthood. Our modes of play have dramatically changed, and increasingly younger children have access to video games as the primary mode of play.  There are a number of problems that are associated with gaming as the primary mode of play, and these include: becoming bored with other forms of play and therefore not engaging in other types of more traditional recreational activities such as sports; exposure to sexual and violent content at far to early a stage in development; failure to participate in group activities; loss of connection to play in the natural world (such as in parks and the yard), and risk of becoming over-exposed or inappropriately exposed to content on the web. Whats more, continuous gaming helps program the brain to expect instant rewards, shortens the expected time between cause and effect, and makes long-term planning and nuanced thinking difficult.  Finally, there is evidence that over-exposure to the content of video games at an early age has profound impact on the development of the brain and the sensory systems, and may be a vehicle for fostering ADHD.

Educational Consultant

As an educational consultant, it is not unusual for me to work with your child’s school, no matter what stage they are in the educational ladder. Dr. Kothari has many years of experience working with pre-schools, day care centers, elementary and high school teachers, counselors, and principles, as well as extensive knowledge of the admissions, counseling, and educational process and practices for the college education experience. Managing transitions in moving between grades and between schools is a common challenge that occurs for children. Such transitional stages serve as markers for problems in the child’s development. An example, the transition from high school to college, where there are numerous challenges for the student that have to do with autonomy, goal-setting, self-directing their own behavior, minimal monitoring of behavior, financial responsibility, academic responsibility, selecting appropriate course work, class attendance, managing pressures, and use of alcohol and drugs on college campuses. It is not unusual for young adults to have difficulty making the transition and PsychotherapyWorks can step in as these problems are emerging to help locate where the problems in development are set, strengthen these areas, and help focus the strengths and self-confidence that are natural allies for academic success and healthy peer relationships.

Dr. Kothari has worked for many years with educators, counselors, and school administrators in numerous counties in Virginia and Maryland and is well respected by professionals and families for the work he has done to advocate for the rights of children, as well as the right direction for the appropriate development of children into healthy and happy adults. As a parent to two children, one who is a college graduate, he has many years of personal experience that sensitizes him to the complex ways that families are impacted by their children’s experience in the many stages of the educational ladder.

I have known Dr. Eric Kothari for more than a decade as both his mentor and friend while doing his doctorates in theology and psychology. I can tell you that with this kind of multi-educational background he brings rich horizons of knowledge, seasoned clinical intuition and expertise to his clinical work. But what he has to offer his clients goes far beyond knowledge. The psychoanalyst D.W. Winnicott wrote “at the core center of each person is an incommunicado element and this is sacred and most worthy of preservation.” This is the essential healing value of Dr Kothari. He brings a caring and wakeful presence to the heart of You, --providing a setting that itself is a protected and inwardly nourishing sanctum. His consulting room speaks more than volumes in what he offers his clients. It is designed as a space for deep inquiry and intimate collaboration between You and him. It expresses the richness of his own predilections and natural wood-grain, reflecting his cross-cultural heritage and core identity. Above all it is arranged to safely host and hold your presence-- a clear space that makes room for centering on You and all that you deeply care about. The space is set up for the deep process of opening up, discovering what kind of life you want, exploring what is in the way of that, and finding the resources to remove obstacles so that you can move forward into the kind of life you most deeply desire. It is my privilege to recommend him whole-heartedly!

C. Michael Smith, Ph.D., psychologist, scholar, and author of several books including Jung and Shamanism in Dialogue [New York: Paulist Press, 1997] and Psychotherapy and the Sacred [Chicago: CSSR, 1995] and of the forthcoming book, the Archetypal Heart

Dr. Eric Kothari is that person with a significant gift for embracing the practice of psychology with compassion and caring. Not only are his talents grounded in the science of psychology, also he brings a well-rounded background in culture and the arts to the process of psychotherapy. Having both a doctorate in psychology and ministry his work has spiritual significance that far exceeds what the traditional psychologist has to offer. Taken together, Dr. Kothari’s training, practice experience avail him of the opportunity to offer a holistic approach to psychotherapy that considers the whole person. Overall, Dr. Kothari’s fields of interest and depth of experience will be a natural benefit to anyone seeking to understand themselves more fully, as well as meet their full potential. -
